i.d.e.a. Museum Collab Mural

On March 22 and 23 (Friday and Saturday), I’ll be at the i.d.e.a. Museum creating a collaborative mural with the community. From 11 AM to 2 PM each day, visitors to the museum can help me paint this out-of-this-world mural inside their idea studio. The i.d.e.a. Museum is located at 150 W. Pepper Place in Mesa, AZ. Participation in this event is included with admission to the museum. Bring the whole family to help me paint this!

The good people at Snood City helped me put together the first one of these events. The idea was pitched as a paint by numbers mural that the visitors to the Glendale Arts Festival could paint over the course of the day.

The process starts with buffing the walls to a prime white. Then I use a projector to display a line drawing on the blank walls. I do the line out with a black paint marker and let the whole thing dry.

At the event, we hand out basic water-soluble paint and brushes. At first, we wrote in the colors that each section “should'' be painted but people took immediate creative liberties, and the painting took on a life of its own. The end result still has a lot of the direction from the original drawing, but it has its own authentic feeling to that event.

Usually, we take the temporary walls and buff over them for the next event. It’s a piece of art that is created and stays only for that event. The i.d.e.a. Museum collaborative mural will be the first one I create that is intended to stay in the space for an extended period of time. With the community contribution we will be able to create a fun piece of art that can be experienced for years to come.
